Our Analysis and Test Results
Pura started in 2008 with the idea for an eco-healthy reusable bottle that was safe for little ones and less wasteful for the environment. After some blowback from naysayers who didn't share Pura's vision, the company persisted in making a bottle that could grow with children. By 2012, Pura had won 14 awards, and in 2016 they became the first company to earn a Non-Toxic Certified rating from MadeSafe.
Performance Comparison
The Pura Kiki delivers the best in eco-health by being 100% free of plastic, instead being manufactured from safe, anti-bacterial, #304 stainless steel and silicone. You'll be hard-pressed to find a bottle as sleek, simple, and health-conscious as the Pura.
Likes
The Kiki has NO PLASTIC, none, zilch, anywhere. The vacuum sealed stainless steel construction is a refreshing change from most other cups, and it has a sleek design that is as utilitarian and safe as it is simple, as well as being sized to fit in any cup holder on the planet.
This cup is easy to clean, and it seemed to wash "cleaner" than plastic with no residue or film remaining inside. This bottle has only a few parts, and they are intuitive to assemble and take apart. It has a wide opening (perfect fit for bottle brushes and spill-free liquid transfer), and an internal surface that is electropolished.
We also like that this cup really doesn't leak; any dripping that occurs is just residual liquid left in the spout from the last sip. This cup comes with a silicone cap that keeps the spout clean and prevents all leaks and drips. The soft silicone cap is a little tricky to get on, but once in place, it works well.
The cup is #304 stainless steel and has anti-bacterial qualities. It is a high quality, thicker steel, that is resistant to dents, corrosion, and staining. Stainless Steel has no potential for leaching chemicals or heavy metals (like plastic), and no risk of breaking or chipping. The stainless components of this bottle have a lifetime warranty.
Also, this system functions with other spouts and nipples from the Pura lineup, so you can customize the bottle to your needs and your toddler's preferences. This both ensures the bottle's frequent use and increases the chances that it will grow with your child for several years.
Dislikes
The main drawback to this bottle is the hefty price tag. It is the most expensive sippy in this review. However, unlike the Kiki of yore, Pura now includes the silicone sleeve with each bottle when it used to be an accessory that you had to purchase separately. While the price is high at over $25 per bottle, we believe it is worth the price of admission given the quality and design that includes high-end steel, easy to clean design, and interchangeable spouts. We think you'll be using this bottle for years, giving it a lot more value when compared to plastic options that may not last for one.
We think the silicone sleeve is hard to take off and put on, which you'll need to do for cleaning. While the sleeve is designed to fit tightly, it can be almost too tight. Pura has included new instructions for getting the sleeve on incorporating a trick with baking soda which we highly recommend you try. But be careful not to leave the sleeve on for more than a handful of uses because it can get gross under there over time.
We also don't like that the volume measurements are on the inside of the bottle. The measurement markings do not have very many hash marks for varying amounts, and because you can't see through the cup, you have to take the lid off to see how much is still inside. But, at least it has them, which is something you won't find in any other steel cup in this review.
Conclusion
Overall, we love this bottle and continue to be impressed by its thoughtful yet simple design. Its eco-health considerations are better than anything we've seen so far, and we feel no other features are sacrificed to meet the high health and safety standards. While significantly more expensive than the competition, we feel both the Kiki's durability, and interchangeable mouthpieces make it an excellent long-term investment that families can use for years to come.
