The Skinny

The Thermos Foogo Phase 1 Insulated transition sippy is a pretty good all around sippy, and it won our Top Pick award for insulated cups in this category. This cup offered an easy to drink from spout, ergonomic removable handles, and above average leak scores and eco-health. While the cup might have been on the heavier side compared to the other cups we tested, its weight came from being insulated which was good for keeping perishable liquids, like breast milk, from spoiling so it wasn't a deal breaker for us. The body is made from food grade stainless steel, which means it is easy to clean, leaves no filmy residue, and does not leach chemicals into its contents. This cup scored 70 out of 100 overall, which was the highest of any steel cup in our transition sippy tests. We would recommend this award winning cup.

The Thermos Foogo Phase 1 Insulated transition sippy is a stainless steel cup made by Thermos. The cup offers food grade stainless steel, a soft spout, and ergonomic handles. It has an easy to clean valve, is kid-friendly, and dishwasher safe. The parts of this cup are interchangeable with all Foogo cup parts for easy transitions as your child grows. This cup comes in a few different color and style combos, and is widely available in stores and online.

This cup scored well in the leakage category. While it didn't score a perfect 10 like many of its competitors, it did score a 7 of 10, which we felt was good enough, and certainly not a deal breaker. The amount of liquid that came out was minimal in both the sideways and upside down tests, with just a few drops for each. Unless the liquid is a colored juice, or similar, the amount was certainly acceptable.

We liked that this cup was stainless steel and insulated; both properties helped it scored well in the eco-health category, giving it an 8 of 10, a high in this metric out of all the cups we tested.

The steel is a food grade stainless steel that is easy to clean, does not leach chemicals into its contents, and is dishwasher safe. While the steel made the cup heavier than most of its competitors, we felt the trade-off was worth the added bonus that steel offered to baby's health and the environment. The cup's insulation was also a health benefit, as it allowed some temperature control of the cup's contents, which meant perishable liquids like breast milk can last longer than in a regular cup.

Though the cup was heavy, it comes with nice removable handles to help babies grip easier, and for longer periods of time in order to drink. The handles seem well placed and baby friendly.

We also like the drinking spout on this cup. The construction is soft and easy on gums, as well as easy to drink from. It is made of silicone and was easy to disassemble for cleaning. The cup scored an 8 of 10 for ease of sucking, but lost points in the overall ease of use metric for being heavier than the competition. In addition, given the ease of use of this valve we felt it more closely adhered to the American Dental Association desire of a no valve cup; which in time could potentially lead to better overall oral hygiene.

Dislikes

This cup was the heaviest cup we tested in transition sippys. However, this wasn't really a surprise given that it is insulated, and made from stainless steel. It would be nice if the cup were lighter, but we did not feel like this was a deal breaker given the benefits of insulated steel, and the fact that none of our in-house tester babies seemed to have trouble holding or picking up the cup.
Even though the Phase 1 was heavier than other sippys most testers were able to use it

It would be nice if this cup came with a cap; some kind of detachable lid so the leak factor could be decreased during travel, but it would not add unnecessary weight to the cup while in use. As we stated earlier, the little bit of leaking this cup did was not a deal breaker, and was better than average. However, while it was an acceptable amount during regular use, it might be too much during travel with the cup in a diaper bag or car seat for an extended period of time. In these circumstances, a cap would be nice and would solve any potential leaking aggravation by eliminating leaks before they could occur.

Conclusion

In short, we like this cup. It offers a nice eco-healthy body, that keeps contents internal temperature relatively constant for hours. It has nice ergonomic handles for an easy grip, and a soft gum friendly spout that is easy to drink from. This cup earned the Top Pick award for insulated cups. Whatever this cup lacked, like being lightweight or perfectly leak free, we felt was a trade-off for the other benefits (steel and insulated) that we just didn't find in any other transition sippy we tested. We would recommend this cup to parents, especially if they are using the cup for feeding liquids, or for long days away from home when content temperature might be more important.
