The Skinny

The bumGenius Freetime All-In-One functions much like a disposable because it's very easy to use. All-In-One diapers or AIOs are a great choice for first-time cloth diaper users who may be intimidated by the idea of matching the right insert to cover. There's not the extra step of stuffing inserts into pockets or folding a prefold to fit correctly inside the cover. The inserts are sewn right into the cover so it eliminates a lot of the guesswork. This is a one-size diaper, so it has a lot of sizing options to find the right fit for your baby. It is well-made, comfortable and performed great in our testing.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The bumGenius brand is part of a product line created by Cotton Babies which also includes the brands Flip Hybrid and Econobum, the later being a prefold/cover system. With this wide variety of brands, Cotton Babies seeks to increase accessibility of cloth diapering to all families, each with different preferences, needs, lifestyles, and budgets.

All-in-one diapers (AIOs) are noted for their ease-of-use. With everything in one piece, there is less to deal with in comparison to other styles of cloth diapers with separated inserts and covers. This makes AIO diapering very similar to using disposables; when it's time for a change, just put on a fresh one. Because of this relative simplicity, AIO style diapers are popular with parents new to cloth diapering, as well as day care centers. You can learn more about AIO diapers in the How Diapering with Cloth Works section of our article, Cloth Diapering vs. Disposables.

The bumGenius Freetime is a One-Size AIO cloth diaper which fits a size range from 8 to 35+ lbs. It is well-fabricated with quality seams and zero loose threads. The outer cover fabric has a smooth, flexible feel and the inner fabric remained soft after many washings.

Absorbency

The Freetime scored a 5 of 10 in absorbency. The inserts are composed of stay-dry 80% polyester/20% nylon fabric which has decent wicking ability. There is also an extra layer of microfiber terry sewn into the shell for absorbency. Below are absorbency filter photos showing the amount of surface moisture left which would be what is against baby, Flip (left), Rumparooz G2 (center), and Freetime (right).

Flip Hybrid with synthetic Stay Dry Insert was the stand-out in our absorbency testing with an impressive 8 of 10.
The G2 scored a 7 of 10 in absorbency.
bumGenius Freetime scored a 5 of 10 in absorbency.

We like that the insert layers are semi-attached which allows them to overlap or fold a few different ways to maximize absorption in just the right spot. This configuration allows the insert layers to dry faster which is important as the bumGenius Freetime should be exclusively line-dried.

Fit/Leakage

The bumGenius Freetime AIO One-Size (8 to 35+ lbs) truly is a diaper that can be used from early infancy into the toddler years. Although we tested several other "one-size" systems that didn't seem to live up to this promise, the bumGenius Freetime does. It snaps down to a very small size and expands nicely to a large one.

The bumGenius Freetime has quite a slender fit, moreso than the other AIO we tested, the Thirsties Duo All-In-One. BumGenius really cuts out the bulk without compromising on absorbency or its "one-size" fit range.

The Freetime never leaked during our hands-on testing.

Comfort

We like that the bumGenius Freetime has stretchy tabs where the diaper snaps at the waist and two rows of snaps along the front waistband, two features that make it stand out above the Thirsties AIO. These features really allow baby to move around without bunching up or gaping at the waist like some of the other covers we tested.

Ease-of-Use

We found the bumGenius Freetime All-in-One delivered on the promise of ease-of-use associated with the AIO approach. We found it to function much like a disposable in it's simplicity. It scored very highly in our tests compared to all the other cloth diapers we tested, and higher than any other AIO diaper.

It's easy. Snap it on your baby and you're ready to go. There are a few ways that the manufacture suggests you can fold the insert flaps so that you increase absorbency where your baby needs it most, but honestly, we simply laid them flat and it seemed to work great.

Though we like the the bumGenius Freetime All-in-One, there are some downsides to this system. With any AIO, re-using the cover is not an option, so it makes for more laundry as well as the necessity to have a larger number of AIO diapers on hand than compared to a hybrid cloth diapering system like the Flip Hybrid, our Best Value award winner. The fabric of the Freetime also retains some stains. All of the bumGenius diaper covers have to be line-dried, and because these inserts are sewn in, the whole thing has to be dried this way which definitely requires additional time in your laundry routine.

Eco-Health

The bumGenius Freetime All-in-One scored 7 of 10 in Eco-Health, relatively low for a cloth diaper, because it is made of all synthetic materials. The cover is 100% polyester with stretch tabs of 95% polyester/5% spandex. As noted above, the stay-dry inserts are made of 80% polyester/20% nylon.

Conclusion

This is a straight-forward diaper that most people will find easy to use, especially those who are steering away from the addtional steps required with pocket diapers or All-In-Twos (insert and separate cover). While it's comfortable on baby without bulk and fits great under clothing, you need to be fully signed up for using a new cover for each change and line-drying the Freetime. That being said, the bumGenius Freetime is a wonderful choice for an AIO diaper.

Video

The following is a You Tube video from The Washable Nappy Company. This gives a good demonstration of how to adjust the rise to from smallest to largest settings as well as how to fold the two flat absorbent inserts to accommodate the varied absorbency needs of a boy versus a girl. Love that the British use the word "poppers" instead of snaps:)
