Boppy Two-Sided Nursing Review
Price: $45 List | $44.99 from Amazon
Pros: Fits close to the body, lots of support, plush, very easy to clean
Cons: Short sides may be a problem for taller women, smaller buckles
Bottom line: A favorite nursing pillow thanks to its structure, support and comfort for mom and baby
The Boppy Two-Sided Nursing Pillow is one of our favorites and scored well overall with an 82 of 100, just 5 points below our Editors' Choice winner the Blessed Nest Organic Nesting Pillow. At $49 less expensive, however, the Boppy solidly earns our Best Value award. Boppy made many variations to the Boppy Original by making the Nursing Pillow taller, with two distinct nursing surfaces: one plush and firm with contouring on the inner surface, the other cushy and round just like a pillow. Thus, mom has an option of which side suits her and baby best depending upon their size, baby's development, or the day. In addition, the Nursing Pillow has a dual buckle to provide a snugger fit and accommodate mom to use either hand.

Analysis and Hands-on Test Findings
The Boppy Pillow was invented in 1989 by Susan Brown in Colorado and just celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. The Boppy Company's World Headquarters is in Golden, Colorado. The Boppy Original all the rage in the 90's even making an appearance on the sitcom "Friends." In 2000, a variety of slipcovers became available and from there the innovations keep on coming. We really love their newest addition, the Two-Sided Nursing Pillow. Read on for more details.
To start, the Boppy Nursing Pillow offers some of the best support for mom and baby, scoring an 9 of 10 in Nursing Comfort alongside our Editors' Choice winner, the Blessed Nest Organic Nesting Pillow and the My Brest Friend Deluxe. What stands out most about this pillow is its firm plush surface with contoured edging for mom's arms to rest while cradling baby. As baby grows, the opposite side is similar to the Original Boppy but is even squishier as it has a little more polyester, thus once baby gains improved head, neck, and core control, this side is used much more.
Thanks to the dual buckle system, this pillow snugs up close to mom's body and stays there and baby isn't prone to scooting inward toward mom during a feed.
As baby grows, women with shorter torsos may find the 7.5" height of the Nursing Pillow more difficult to use. This height did shine with mothers post c-section, however, as the height limited their need to lean over while feeding. And, for taller women, we found that the shorter sides of the Boppy Nursing Pillow did not offer enough support for their elbows to rest.
Ease of Use
In terms of Ease of Use, the Boppy Nursing Pillow scored a 7 of 10 with three pillows ahead of it, the Boppy Original with a score of 9 of 10 and the My Brest Friend Deluxe and Blessed Nest Nesting Pillow an 8 of 10.
We did find this pillow to be smaller in size than most of the nursing pillows in our review, making it easy to carry from room to room and place onto mom prior to a feeding session. And, because it is wider than the Boppy Original, baby has more room for nursing as well as be propped up for burping.
Though we like the addition of the Nursing Pillow's buckles, we did find in our testing that the pillow works great even when not latched. Something this buckle system offers that neither the My Brest Friend pillows do not is a double buckle system which means women can use either their right or left hand to fasten, unfasten, or adjust. With the Boppy Nursing Pillow buckled on mom can cradle baby in her arms while walking to the crib and then remove the pillow from either side. Nonetheless, what ultimately gave the Nursing Pillow a of 7 of 10 in Ease of Use below the My Brest Friend Deluxe was that we preferred the actual larger buckle on the My Brest Friend finding it easier to manipulate while holding baby.
What we love most about this pillow is the duel side for baby to nurse on. The plush pillow side is one of the softest for baby to rest on while still providing enough stability under baby's weight. Meanwhile, the foam side is a great sturdy surface to help new nursing mom's to feel confident as they practice holding baby and getting the latch just right.
What we love about Boppy is that the company has a commitment to not using any harmful flame retardant chemicals in their pillows. More and more studies are showing that the unnecessary, continual, exposure to flame retardant chemicals may cause health and cognitive problems in infants and children. Therefore, we appreciate how Boppy meets all of the Federal Rules and Regulations on safety for babies while still providing a safe place for them to rest and nurse. The Despite this commitment, the Boppy Nursing Pillow earned a four out of ten on echo health and an 8 out of ten on material quality. This pillow is made with cotton-polyester blends for the outer material and a polyurethane insert and does not yet have the option of having an organic cover on its pillow side. These materials provide a good balance of form and function. They can withstand continual use, be cleaned very easily and are safe for baby. Something that Boppy offers is fun fabrics to choose from and the Boppy Nursing Pillow does not disappoint with the playful fabrics options offered for mom.
Thanks to the strong fill of the pillow side of the Boppy Nursing Pillow, this pillow does not loose shape after continual use. It was just as supportive on day one when tested with a six week old infant as it was during our final testing stages on a six month old infant. During the entire test the pillow maintained optimal support to allow baby to have a close fit to mom and have clear passageways for eating.
Ease of Cleaning
Even with two different surfaces and inserts used, the Boppy Nursing Pillow was still one of the easiest to clean. Both sides of the Boppy Nursing Pillow beaded up liquid right away to help keep the pillow cleaner for baby to nurse from. We are very thankful that the foam used in the Boppy Nursing Pillow can be removed and washed with soap and water, although we never actually needed to do this because the fabric prevented leaking. This makes the entire pillow washable which we appreciate for both the cleanliness of what our baby will lay on as well as the reduction of possibility of any milk smells.
The Boppy Nursing Pillow does not have much use outside of nursing. The C-shape is a bit wider than the Original Boppy so it cannot be used as easily to help baby sit up when older. However we did find that mom's used this pillow longer after nursing was complete as they propped baby up on the wide edge to talk and play. Although the Boppy Nursing Pillow does not come in rainbow of color options, all the fabrics for this model are tranquil in palette which we found helped both mom and baby relax for nursing.
This is the nursing pillow we would purchase for our friends and recommend to our sisters. The price is affordable and the quality of the pillow will last a nursing mother through more than one child. At about $10-$15 more than the Original Boppy you get a pillow with a closer fit, more secure structure and maintain the quality and ease of cleaning that Boppy is known for.
This pillow was a favorite and is perfect choice for moms who only plan to nurse for the first few months, when baby is small and when mom needs all the help she can get. If mom plans to nurse for four or more months then we recommend you also get, or get instead, the cheaper My Brest Friend Deluxe, Original Boppy or our Editors' Choice, Blessed Nest due to their smaller height which can better accommodate larger babies.
